Instagram displays them as swipeable slides, but on the data level each slide is independently addressable. That's why a carousel downloader has to process each slide separately rather than treating the whole post as a single image, and why a "download all" option needs to bundle several distinct files into one ZIP rather than just saving one image.
Image Resolution: What Actually Determines It
Instagram stores each photo at several resolutions and serves the one that matches the requesting device — a phone on a slow connection gets a smaller file than a desktop browser on the same post.
